● Shroom USB Drive and Mario Brick USB Extension

mario-mushroom-usb-drive_2

For those of you that still love good old Mario, this is a USB drive you’ll definitely appreciate.  This little Shroom will hold your data and look cool while doing it.  Not only that, but you can also pick up a  USB extender that allows for it to be plugged directly into a small brick square.  Strongly resembling the ones out of the game that you would bump to make that precious shroom pop out, to give you just a little extra light.  All the while making your hands look huuuge and the rest of your grow a bit as well.

For the price, I’m not exactly thrilled how much storage it has.  However, I might be willing to overlook it, based on how much geek appeal it has.  The drive is 4GB, which will get you a decent amount of space.  You can purchase the drive on Etsy for $65.  Then there is the Mario Brick USB Extension, the cables can extend anywhere from 1ft on up to 6ft.  Those will cost you $25 a piece on top of what the drive will cost you.

● Scamander RRV can go just about anywhere

The Scamander RRV can go just about anywhere

The Scamander RRV can go just about anywhere

Before he died, Peter Wheeler wanted the ultimate car - one that would not only go fast, but go anywhere. And by anywhere, he meant ANYWHERE. Over land, over water, over just about anything. The end of the day, he had the Scamander.

Because he loved driving fast, but shooting in the outback, Wheeler needed something that wasn’t bound by the roads it ran on, or having to waste hours driving around lakes and streams that block his way.

So he built a vehicle with huge 35 inch tires, and the rear wheels have paddles attached to them. Powered by a 2.0 litre Ford Zetec engine, the Scamander also was designed with individual braking systems which can isolate each wheel separately for better traction. The body, is built from foam plastic pods that are form fitting aerodynamically and positioned around it’s aluminum frame. This keeps the RRV light enough to wade through any lagoon.

The driver sits dead in the middle of the front seat with a near 300 degree field of view from five windows included a very large windshield. Two passenger seats occupy the rear along with covered pickup style bed for more utilitarian purposes.

But will Detroit be seeing something like this any time soon? Not likely as Wheeler was investing his own money into the project and with his death, the fate of the Scamander is very much in doubt. But one thing is for sure, it definitely works.

● Jabra BT2080 launched

jabra-bt2080You might not have heard about GN Netcom so far, but it is actually one of the world leaders in innovative headset solutions, so it is little wonder that the company has released its most intuitive headset to date - the Jabra BT2080. I remember many years ago when Bluetooth headsets were just starting to proliferate the cellphone world and anyone who owned a handset with Bluetooth connectivity could count on it on being one of the latest and greatest handsets, and when compared to today, Bluetooth connectivity is more or less a must in our society. Well, the Jabra BT2080 offers a way for you to communicate with others in a hands-free manner while looking stylish, so check out the details right after the jump.

Specially designed for just about anyone to use, regardless of whether you’re new to the world of cellphones or experienced users, the Jabra BT2080 will be part of the “Easy Series” headset category and will be the first of the lot to offer Jabra’s new proprietary StatusDisplay LED indicators. What does this display do? Well, it was created by Jabra’s own research and development team where multi-colored lights will be used to show the headset’s battery level (we suspect the usual green, yellow and red color scheme will be used here) alongside the important detail - Bluetooth connection status at that point in time.

This stylish Bluetooth headset will also come with intuitively placed buttons, where the answer/end button is located on the front of the headset while the dedicated on/off button is placed in the back. As with most other headsets, volume control is located on the side that makes it easily accessible at the touch of a finger, making sure that users won’t fumble with the controls whnever they are caught by surprise due to a call. The entire Jabra BT2080 tips the scales at less than 3 ounces, where it will come in a sophisticaed matte black finish complete with an attractive silver button, resulting in a contemporary and stylish headset. In addition, there is the smaller ear interface and improved Jabra Eargel that makes sure the headset fits comfortably to a T. Not only that, the BT2080 is also the first among all Jabra headsets to come with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. Amazingly enough, the Jabra BT2080 is priced at an extremely affordable $39.99.

● Samsung jets the Jet

samsung-jetSamsung is back with yet another handset, and the Korean cellular giant ain’t letting up on the competition with the Samsung Jet. This is touted to be one of the latest in mobile handset innovation, and was unveiled at a series of global launch events in London, Dubai and Singapore. Just what is the Samsung Jet, anyways? Well, this cellphone will be equipped with virtually all the benefits of both advanced features found in most modern day smartphones, and will be accompanied by an easy-to-use user interface that is available in conventional handsets.

What sets the Samsung Jet apart from the rest? Well, it can be considered to be a pioneer in terms of display technology as well as performance speed, where the 3.1″ WVGA AMOLED display is touted to offer just about the most vivid and colorful full touchscreen mobile experience ever, not to mention the availability of 16 million colors dancing across the display simultaneously. Sounds pretty good in theory but seriously, just how much color do you think one would like to pack into a 3.1″ display, let alone our eyes that won’t really be able to tell the difference in such a tiny footprint? Still, if bragging rights are what you’re after, then you won’t go wrong with the Samsung Jet.

It will be powered by the latest TouchWiz 2.0 user interface from Samsung, and while we’re sure it is an improvement over its predecessor by offering “an unrivalled user experience”, chances are it won’t be able to hold up to Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0. Still, we’re not here to do a review and the Samsung Jet will boast iconic new features including motion UI, smart unlock and a customizable widget screen to get you going. The Dolfin Internet browser (someone point them to a spelling checker, quick!) is said to be specially designed to work with just about any website, targeting the use of social networking sites especially. Other features include a 5-megapixel camera, built-in GPS, DNSe and SRS Sound Effect technology, 2GB internal memory, as well as EDGE/GPRS Class 12 (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) HSDPA 3.6Mbps (900, 2100 MHz) connectivity.

● The Buffalo USB Hub with On/Off Switch

psh

If you’re constantly unplugging USB cords, just to stop power being sent to it, you might want to check out this little hub with switches.  This would be an ideal item for anyone with a lot of novelty USB products.  While you need to concentrate, you could shut off your string of USB lights or some random dancing animal.  All the while never having to unplug it, so there will be no need to search for the end of the USB cord later when you want the item turned back on.

This Buffalo hub has a total of 4 different ports for all of your USB gadgets.  It also comes in a total of four different colors.  In addition to being able to be powered by the always obvious USB, there is an AC adapter, so you can also plug it into the wall.  It comes with four 1.5m USB cables.  It’s not a US product though, Buffalo will be releasing it into Japan as of mid-October.  When that happens the hub will be sold for 3,885 yen or about $39.

● The Anti-stab Knife

knifeI have an idea for a remake of Psycho, in case Universal wants to do it again. In the infamous shower scene, Norman Bates, dressed as his mother, dramatically sneaks into the bathroom, where Marion Crane is bathing. He then quickly draws back the shower curtain and as he goes to stab her… “Oh man, this is the anti-stab knife! Wait right here, I’ll be right back.”

Yes, someone actually invented an anti-stab knife. I realize that concept sounds as ridiculous as an anti-killing gun, but the blunt upper protrusion prevents someone from a fatal wound. Apparently that pointy part on the front is capable of only getting caught on clothing, and it can only pierce flesh just a little.

The knife’s designer has admitted that no knife is stab proof, so you could kill someone with this if you tried hard enough. The purpose of the anti-stab knife is to prevent a fatality through a crime of passion. So if a couple is having a spat while one of them is chopping up veggies for dinner, rest assured that no one will be killed if tempers flare.

Apparently, stabbing crime is big in the UK. It’s like gun crime in the States, but ironically smaller. So if the proliferation of anti-stab knives could reduce stabbing fatalities, more power to it. Think of it as a trigger lock for a knife.

● Supermarket Parking Lot makes its own power

parkinglotgenerator-thumb-468x281-19418At Coolest Gadgets, we love to report on new ways to make energy from methods where energy goes to waste. About a year ago, it was the Revolution Door, a revolving door that is connected to a turbine, harnessing the energy for when people walk through the door.

Here is a another gem of an idea when it comes to energy conservation: a power-generating parking lot. It works with a series of plates that create a rocking motion when cars drive over them. The rocking motion can turn generators and thus make power.

How much power? It can make about 30 Kilowatts of energy per hour, to be exact. You may not think that isn’t enough, but it could be enough to power the store, including the registers.

So, what are we looking at, a future where every store is powered by a parking lot generator? Considering how many cars go over supermarket parking lots every day, this looks to be a welcome change.

It also looks like we are entering an age where we harness all the power we can, from any place we can. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone figures out a way of using the power of my typing hands to power my laptop. Feel free to lieave a comment if you have any other energy-making ideas.

● SkullyBoom speaker is meant for the active sort

skullyboom

Not everyone wants a speaker to sit prettily and safely on their desk.  For those that are the active types, you might want something more durable.  Which is exactly what the creators of SkullyBoom are trying to do.  They wanted speakers that were portable, but in the event you wipe out on your skateboard, it’s not going to hurt the speakers.  Granted, you’ll need to get some kind of a durable case for your MP3 player too, but at least you know the speaker is safe.

SkullyBoom has a Lithium-ion battery that will run the speaker for up to 3-6 hours.  It has a primary loudspeaker, as well as a tweeter.  It’s also said to have surprising power, but then everyone likes to claim that their speaker is super powerful.  The main perk is that the speaker will stand up to the beatings it might receive while you’re out and about, goofing off with friends.  It’s not out just yet, the official release date is June of 2010 and it’ll cost$60 at that time.  However, if you pre-order now it’ll cost you $30 and you should be able to get it right around Christmas.  They’re looking for supporters so that they can mass produce these and keep them affordable.  So you could even put a small down payment on a speaker and they’ll give you a discount for later.

● The Flower Charming Light with Torch

flower-lamp-flashlight-510x382

If you have a young girl in your family who notoriously despises the dark, this pretty lamp would be a great gift.  It’s not only cute to have sitting out, but versatile within its functions as well.  As long as she is into very flowery gifts, she’s sure to love the light.  It can sit out and glow, giving at least a little light in her room while she’s trying to go to sleep.  Then if for some reason she needs to go roaming the halls or go in search of a bathroom, it can also be switched so that it can be used as a flashlight.

The flower itself can be turned on by pushing on the flower.  That way it’s not running all day long when the light is no longer needed.  Then towards the base of the light is a separate switch for the flashlight itself.  In order to keep the light up and running it requires 3 AAA batteries.  It’d be nice if it had the option to be plugged in, so you wouldn’t go through quite so many batteries.  However, this way does keep things simple.  You can purchase the light for $8.99 from GizFever.

● Flip announces own video channel

Not satisfied with giving their customers YouTube capability, Pure Digital - the makers of the Flip pocket video cameras, are updating their on board software to make it easier to upload videos by creating their own custom channels which they can then invite others to enjoy.

This is especially comforting to parents who want to share videos of their friends and family without letting anyone else viewing them sans permission (although, to be fair, YouTube and other video hosts do have privacy settings that also do just that).

When users upload video to their dedicated channels, an email goes out to a previously approved “white list” of email addresses advising them there’s an update to the channel with thumbnail previews included.

Flip's new video channel lets users create their own private YouTube like experience.

Flip's new video channel lets users create their own private YouTube like experience.

The software will also allow users to drag clips off the channel, edit them or update them and then drag them back. Lastly, in concert with the new Flip software comes an iPhone application which enables MacHeads to watch Flip Channel videos directly, as well as recording videos using their iPhone and uploading them directly to the channel.

Unfortunately, for the Mino and Ultra HD Cameras, the quality of video viewing won’t be true 720p, but the reality of HD on YouTube and other video hosts is that it isn’t really shown in true HD anyway.

● The iPod Stereo Pool Oasis with built-in massager

the-ipod-stereo-and-massage-pool-lounge-chair

I remember back in my day when a we just had normal blow up chairs in the pool.  Normally they were the kind you have to lay flat on too.  Now all these crazy kids have their new fangled technology tossed in.  They can’t just have a normal blow up chair, no, they need speakers and cup holders.  Well this blow up gadget would definitely make for a relaxing day out at the pool.  Especially since you’ll have you tunes handy and playing right by your head.

It also has a vibrating massager that targets your lower and upper back as well as your thighs and calves.  It has a spot to hold your iPod or MP3 player that will keep it safe, it stores it within a built-in waterproof dock.  There’s an attached remote that fits into the armrest to control the massager, but no such remote to take care of the MP3 player.  Which means you’ll have to either deal with a song or brave taking it out of the waterproof area to change the song.  To keep the lounger powered it requires 4 AA batteries.  It’ll cost you $199.95 fromHammacher and Schlemmer.

● Concept Oven Cooks with Lasers

cookinginthefuture-1_kb2yw_17621We already discussed an oven that cooks via USB, and we would be remiss in our duties at Coolest Gadgets if we did not report on other advancements in oven technology, such as this particular oven that cooks with lasers.

That’s right, lasers (just imagine the hands doing quotes like Dr. Evil). In fact, this oven uses a combination of three lasers to cook your food, which are specifically under your control. So if you want your pizza cooked at 350 degrees, you can make that distinction. I’m not really sure how that distinction is made, though. I mean, do you just use one laser for Jiffy Pop and three for a turkey?

I would imagine that complications will arise when cooking with lasers, which is why this oven has a “specially designed ventilation system”. I’m guessing that this system fans away the odd scents that occur with laser cooking. Then again, I really don’t know much about cooking with lasers. Man, that sounds like some futuristic cooking show. “Hello, everyone, and welcome to Cooking with Lasers. Today we’ll be blasting a pot roast”.

That is about all my sources tell me about this particular oven, which is still a concept for “Cooking in the Futur”, an Electrolux competition. Personally, I think it is a neat idea whose time has come, and I hope designer Ludovic Peperstraete wins some sort of award for this.

● Hologram Phones? It’s Trou.

trou2Sure, we loved the iPhone with its complete touchscreen interface, so you can imagine the excitement when a holographic interface finally comes out. Yes, I am fully aware that a holographic interface sounds too good to be true, and the Trou Hologram phone isn’t, at least, not yet.

I’m sure we all love the basic concept photo behind this, with the 3-D hologram of the car sitting on the screen. Just imagine how cool it will be when you turn your mobile around and can see the car at nearly every angle.

Still, holographic projectors have been known to eat up lots of power, so that is definitely one obstacle for the small projectors on the surface of the display. I’m sure there are many other things that prevent our science-fiction visions of a holographic future from becoming reality.

So until Princess Leia can send “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi” as a text message, keep your fingers crossed on this one.

Now it is the time on Coolest Gadgets where you comment. How long will it take before holograms on our cellular phones become reality? Are we looking at 10 years? How about 20 years? Chime in and let me know what you think.

● E-LEAD Bluetooth Lazy Pad

eleadThe E-LEAD Bluetooth Lazy Pad is a terrific product for those who want a combination Bluetooth and mouse for their laptop or netbook. Don’t ask me why you want that, but someone people prefer that remote action, I guess.

For those who like wireless action, then you will enjoy the Bluetooth feature. Of course, some of you may have laptops or netbooks that don’t come with Bluetooth, Fortunately, you can connect to the keyboard via USB. The battery in this keyboard is a 500mAh that is capable of up to 8 hours of usage.

I see a small problem with this product. You will notice in the middle of the keyboard is some sort of crease, but the frame doesn’t look like it could fold in. What is strange is the “mouse” segment of the device is located underneath the keyboard, which means you’ll need to flip it over whenever you want to use the touchpad on the other side which is accompanied by a couple of buttons (left and right click, of course).

I also think that this Lazy Pad is misnamed. I have no idea why E-LEAD Electronics has named their product the Lazy Pad, because I see nothing slothful about it. After all, if we are going to call this Bluetooth keyboard and mouse a Lazy Pad, does that mean that every remote control device or mobile is inherently a product of a lazy culture?

Sadly, I think that it is true. Yes, our gadgets and electronic devices make us lazy. I can’t stand it when some product comes out with some name which describes our culture too well.

● Panasonic outs lightest HD camcorders

panasonic-camcorder
Panasonic is back in the limelight yet again with the release of a couple of High Definition camcorders which are touted to be the lightest in the world. While we don’t doubt the authenticity of that claim, these days such titles are often traded among rival manufacturers in a matter of weeks or months, due to constant advancement in technology. Well, the two HD camcorders in question are the HDC-SD10 and the HDC-TM10, where the former will rely on the SDHC/SD memory card format as the recording media of choice, while the latter takes on a more versatile Twin Memory format, saving your recorded memories onto its 8GB internal flash memory or using an SDHC/SD memory card as well. Either model will tip the scales at a mere 0.5lbs, although the relatively small body is able to pack in 16x optical zoom capability and advanced features to produce beautiful 1920 x 1080 Full-HD videos.

The 16x optical zoom found in the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 will be supported by the Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) function, one of the main tools in helping both camcorders achieve clear zooming while minimizing hand-shakes and jitters that often accompany lesser models. Panasonic’s Advanced O.I.S. is sensitive enough to detect and correct hand-shake of around 4,000 times per second, and allows the high-powered optical zoom to produce clear, stable zoom shots. In addition, the Active mode also extends the hand-shake correction range to allow the shooting of clear, crisp images while walking or moving.

Other features found on staple Panasonic camcorders include the iA (Intelligent Auto) function that is able to choose the most suitable scene mode for those who have no idea how to use this, thanks to its chip that is able to pick out the right shooting conditions, in addition to Face Detection for easy portrait shooting, Intelligent Contrast Control for proper contrast in videos and AF/AE Tracking (Auto Focus/Auto Exposure Tracking) that helps you track a moving subject automatically. The Panasonic HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 will retail for $549.95 and $599.95, respectively.

● Muvi Micro Camcorder

muvi-microIt is nice to see the technology and wonders miniaturization of a device can do for us humans - check out the Muvi Micro Camcorder that is able to do more than what a high end analog camcorder is capable of more than a decade ago. All recorded images and videos are stored on a microSD memory card, where it is expandable up to 8GB. Features include VGA resolution recording quality and the ability to record using voice commands. Heck, you can even let it be sound-activated, recording whenever it detects a sound of 65 decibels and above. Interested parties can pick up the delectable Muvi Micro Camcorder for £79.95.

● Steering Wheel Bluetooth Speakerphone

steering-wheel-btMore and more states around the US and countries all over the world have already banned the use of cellphones while driving unless you’re using a hands-free kit of sorts. Of course, wireless versions are preferred in this day and age since there are no wires for you to get tangled with whenever you negotiate a treacherous mountain pass, making the Steering Wheel Bluetooth Speakerphone a suitable candidate for your hands-free woes.

This is the Bluetooth speakerphone that attaches to your steering wheel, placing the microphone and speakers closer to you for easier conversations without taking your hands off the wheel. The device uses two 2-watt speakers coupled with noise reduction and echo cancellation technologies for clear transmission and reception. Inbound calls appear on the device’s 9/16″ display as either numbers or names (depending upon how your cell phone is set up), allowing you to accept or reject calls with a press of a button. Volume, mute, and phone book buttons allow further control right from the steering wheel. The device can be paired with up to eight different cell phones and you can transfer up to 600 phone numbers to its 256MB memory. Its rechargeable battery provides five hours of continuous talk time from a three-hour charge using the included DC car adapter.

Sounds like $99.95 well spent, apart from the fact that you won’t be able to use it once you get out of your vehicle. Guess the standard Bluetooth headset still beats them all…

● The Mouse with EMS Massage

ems-mouse1-500x269

If you have sore muscles on a regular basis, then you’ve likely found ways to cope throughout the day.  One thing that might help push you over the edge and keep you feeling good is this mouse.  A mouse is not usually something that you would use to keep your muscles from being sore all the time.  However, that’s exactly what this little Japanese mouse is used for.  The EMS mouse allows for you to hook yourself up and get a bit of relaxation on the exact spot that is giving you troubles.

I have used EMS pads before myself, and it turned out that for my particular type of pain, they didn’t really work.  So it would be better if you knew specifically already that this method does help out your issue.  The EMS pads, if they work on you, not only relieve pain, but can promote healing as well.  The mouse works as a regular mouse, but also controls the pads when you have them hooked to the mouse.  As of now this is just in Japan, so it’ll be hard to get your hands on the mouse.  If you were to, it’d cost you 5,696 Yen or about $58.

● Black & Decker 18-Volt Cordless Pivoting Vacuum Cleaner

black-and-decker-cordless-vacuum-housewares

There are a lot of reasons I typically cringe at the thought of having to vacuum.  First of all they’re just big and clunky, plus you have to move all of the furniture out of the way.  Then to top things off, you have to somehow manage to keep the cord both out of the way of the vacuum, as well as out from in front of you.  That way you’re not tripping over it the entire time you’re vacuuming.  This Black & Decker vacuum has all three of those very typical problems covered.

It has a pivoting action that makes it possible to sweep under all kinds of furniture.  Making it so that you won’t have to keep moving things out of the way.  It’s also cordless, which takes care of the cord issue.  Then it’s a lightweight bagless vacuum, so there is no issue with it being overly awkward.  It also features side-suction vents that allow for the vacuum to clean along walls and baseboards.  Which is good, since this vacuum has no hoses of any kind.  When you need to store it, you just fold it up and put it away on the charging stand.  You can purchase it for $99.99 from Amazon.

● Shoes with GPS Trackers

artgtx_cnn_I realize that this headline might trigger surveillance society fears in some of our readers, but this article isn’t about putting GPS trackers in everyone’s footwear. No, putting a GPS in someone’s shoes is only a way to keep tabs on those who need it.

GTX Corporation and the shoe company Aetrex originally developed this technology to track elderly patients who have Alzheimer’s.

For those who do not know about Alzheimer’s, it is a condition (not a disease, even though it is often referred to as one) that involves both short and long term memory loss. Sometimes the victim is really lost in his or her own world of the past, and doesn’t realize he or she is very much in the present. In short, a victim can be as helpless as a wandering infant. I’m sure some of you have older relatives who have been afflicted with this.

With these GPS shoes, doctors and relatives can track the patient before he or she wanders too far, and get them back home before something bad happens.

The plan is to release these GPS shoes sometime before 2010, and it should retail somewhere in between $200 and $300. An additional $20 monthly fee will be tacked on for those who want to receive alerts should their Alzheimer’s patient leave his or her designated area.

● AITALK lets you talk to your iPod

aibelive_aitalkComputex 2009 has displayed a lot of new technologies recently, and one of them is one by Aibelive (pronounced I believe?) called AITALK. This AITALK allows the user to interact with their iPod with nothing but speech.

This is perfect for those times when you are listening to your iPod while driving or jogging. Instead of awkwardly fumbling with the controls for changing tracks while your eyes should be on the road, you can just say: “skip track” and it will go on to the next song.

Aibelive’s Press Release has also stated that a user can do more than just control an iPod with vocal commands, but he or she can search for a song, artist, or album. I don’t have much information on how it does that. I would imagine it is something like: “Find (song name)” or something like that.

So how does this work? It looks like you have to plug-in something to your iPod in order to make it vocally accessible, but that really is no surprise. You didn’t expect something wireless, did you?

Considering that we live in an age where we need to be hands-free, the AITALK is definitely a technology whose time has come. In fact, Apple should take a hint and put these vocal controls on their new models of iPods.

● The USB Heart 4-Port Hub

usb-heart-4-port-hub

Not all USB hubs need to be geek inspired or a mega hub with 20 different ports.  Instead it’s alright to have the occasional overly feminine hub for those that prefer their technology to appear bright and chipper.  This hub is exactly that and would be great for women of all ages (as long as they prefer things of this style).  It would look especially good in a young girl’s room, not that a young girl would necessarily need a USB hub.  However, if your daughter does need one, this pastel heart is definitely an affordable way to go.

It only has 4 different ports, but that would be enough for a great deal of people.  Most people don’t really need a ton of extras, but merely a few more ports.  Being a hub, it’s compatible with either Mac or PC, obviously.  It comes in the three different colors you see here.  The pale pink, blue and then bright yellow.  So if you don’t want a pastel color, the yellow is a bit more bold.  Brando has these up for sale, and for cheap too.  You can purchase one for all of $10.

● “Antique” Sofa has a hide-a-bed style pool table built in

sofa-snooker-table

What a great idea. This is a sofa which as a pool table built into it hideabed style. Okay, actually, it’s a snooker table, but still. What an ideal addition to an apartment/mancave. According to Craziest Gadgets the couch is about 6 foot long and apparently, it’s quite popular in the UK where they’re fairly cheap.

Made as a joint venture from Pierce Upholsterers and Accrington and Riley - makers of fine British pool tables, and was produced in the 70’s. It’s made of a neutral brown dralon fabric and when opens it flips into a pool table with adjustable leveling feet to make it level. What a fantastic idea which was decades ahead of it’s time. It probably didn’t do too well because manufacturing it would’ve been costly without a computer/motion controlled assembly line. But with the advent of not only computers for design and manufacture, this piece could easily make a resurgence. And why stop there? Imagine a sofa with built in ping pong table, air hockey table, poker table!

As I said, this bad boy has “man cave” written all over it. Currently for bid at eBay.UK at about $200 US but it’s sure to go well north of that.

●Chip Maker has DIY feel for snacks

Microwave chip maker for healthy snacks

Microwave chip maker for healthy snacks

It may look like a slide carousel for those old vacation slides, but this nifty little invention is a do it yourself low fat potato chip maker. simply slice your potato chips wafer thing and line them up in the slots. Stick em in the microwave for a minute and you have what claims to be a nice low fat potato chip. No oil, no extra calories.

Comes complete with the 204mm slotted disk to place the potato chips, and two separate slicing tools for making wafer thin chips from a whole potato. The chip maker also doubles as a serving dish with dipping sectors in the middle. And the nice thing is that it’s certainly ideal to make alternative snacks as well including sweet potato chips, tortilla chips, carrot chips and whatever other vegetable you can slice and nuke into a tasty, healthy snack. That also means kids can use it without fear of being burned or burning down the house.

home006200_03_l

And because most offices have a microwave for cooking of processed TV style dinners, it could make for an ideal afternoon treat when workers need something to get them over that late afternoon slump. And studies show that a baked potato raises the endorphins in the brain and will help you to eat less at meal time.

For $14, it’s well worth seeing if it makes something that actually tastes good without being baked and easily shattered.

● Panasonic Adds HiDef Audio to Video in the GH1

44710_1_468

Canon made headlines with the 5D Mk. II’s ability to shoot high definition video in 1080p. This was a major development as it allowed photographers the ability to get a big movie look to the videos shot. This was because it brought lenses, shutter and aperture settings and depth of field to video. And it looked like a million. Panasonic sees the handwriting on the wall that convergence is the watchword in photography. But they’ve upped the ante to the next level with the Lumix GH1, which can not only shoot 1080p video, but it also adds Dolby digital audio to the mix, meaning photographers have a serious movie studio in their camera.

But unlike the 5d Mk II, which shoots at 21mega pixels, and costs $3,000 to boot, the Lumix GH1 incorporates a standard, and economical 12.1 mp. It shoots video in AVCHD at a cinematic 24 frames per second, or at what panasonic calls “smooth HD” at 60 frames per second with auto focus. Changing to video is also one button easy as pressing the Motion Picture button instantly moves to video recording. Creative Movie mode allows for manual settings, or iA mode which gives users the point and shoot capability they are used to. And iA mode also provides facial recognition to keep subjects in proper focus and in the right light.

And what’ s great is that the camera has not one, but TWO CPUs which enables the HD Video and Dolby Audio to process far faster on the fly. It also means recording in AVCHD for as long as the camera has storage capability.

Cost is about $1500, half the cost Canon’s 5D Mk II.

● Ecco GPS Keychain helps you find your car

p2387_big

If you have the tendency to lose major things, such as your car, you might want to consider this Ecco GPS Keychain.  It’ll make sure you never have to admit to anyone that you haven’t the faintest idea where you parked your car while you’re out and about.  Plus, if you’re someplace new, you can set the keychain to help you find your way back to someplace like your hotel.  It’d make sight seeing a lot easier if you have a device to tell you how to get back to where you came from.

The GPS device is small enough to carry on your keychain, so it’ll always be handy.  When you need it, you can program in 3 different locations to find your way back to.  It will let you know the direction you need to head by pointing the way.  It also lets you know exactly how close you are to your destination.  It’s not exactly something that you would want to use in the car, but it’d be nice while you’re out walking.  It recharges by utilizing your USB port.  You can pick it up for  £69.95 or about $113 from Firebox.

● Beanzawave microwave oven cooks by USB

beanzawave2

How many times have you had to work straight through lunch, only to wonder if being lightheaded affected your job performance more than taking a half hour and eating something substantial. But sometimes you just can’t leave your desk. So does that mean being chained to cubicle and eating cold food the rest of your hectic career? Well how about a USB microwave which can heat small dishes right where are? It’ll have the ability to feed you hot food and drive workmates nuts with the wafting scents of cooked food coming from your cube. That’s where the strangely named Beanzawave comes in as the world’s smallest portable microwave oven.

About the size of a portable camping light, the Beanzawave is run by USB and can cook a tiny snack sized meal or warm a beverage. Currently in prototype, the Beanzawave is a tad over 7 inches tall by 6 inches wide and 6 inches deep. How can USB create the kind of power used to generate microwaves? Well, the reality is that it doesn’t use microwaves at all, per se. It uses the same sort of waves used for cellular telephones (which should give everyone pause considering we all have a phone next to our ears every day) to generate the heat needed to cook or warm up the food or drink. And the Beanzawave can tune those cellular wave frequencies to generate exacting head to cook a wide variety of small foods including pot pies, cups of soup, or even a hamburger.

beanzawave

The Beanzawave was developed by Gama Microwave Technology in association with Heinz (yes, the ketchup company) which hopes to pair it with their new snack food line known as “Snap Pots.” The current prototype also gives the option of powering it with lithium ion batteries making it completely portable for camping and outdoor sportsman activities.

Cost is projected to be about $150.

●The StudioDesk designed for laptop users

studio_desk

Despite that my computer set up is definitely complicated, I have always had more of a preference for the clean simple look when it comes to my desk.  It’s just far easier for me to concentrate when I don’t have a lot of clutter and it’s even better to have all of the cords hidden away.  So for me this desk won’t work due to the way I have things, but it’d be perfect for a student or even a home office that doesn’t require anything but your laptop.

The desk is designed specifically for laptop users.  It gives you the ability to be connected to everything you need to be, while still hiding the clutter of the cords so that they stay out of sight at all times.  To hide all of these cords is a faux leather mat that slides out of the way when you need access to the hidden cords.  You could also store things you only use occasionally underneath the mat.  For those that like to have a mouse handy, but don’t necessarily want to use it all of the time.  Sadly as simplistic as the desk is, it’s a touch on the expensive side.  It’ll cost you $599.95 from BlueLounge.

● The HP Pavilion dv6z Artist Edition Notebook

hpartistnotebook-sb

With summer just beginning, that’s clear indication that it’s time to torture students with the thought of going back by releasing information on back to school products.  Nothing will make a student cringe more than discussing the next school year in early June.  Well at least it’s for a decent reason this time.  HP is releasing a laptop specifically for students and they’re even giving it a slightly more artistic look.

The HP Pavilion dv6z Artist Edition notebook is likely to appeal to a great deal of students that are tired of the usual look of laptops.  Of course most just slap a skin on their laptop if they want to give it a colorful look.  It has a 16-inch LCD and comes with a software suite including Video Studio X2, Corel Painter Sketchpad and Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo x2.  It uses AMD processors with up to 500GB of storage and 8GB of RAM.  They also toss in Magix Music Maker 14.  It’d be a great machine for students into art and music.  It will be shipped as of June 10th and will start at $949.

● Jointech JE100 e-book reader

jointech_je100_ebook_reader_1-480x480Ever since that Amazon Kindle DX came out, news of e-book readers has been spreading like weeds. I already reported on iRex’s promise of a full-color ebook reader by 2010, and Jointech, a company that I had previously never heard of, has just unveiled the JE100.

The Jointech JE100 has a 7-inch screen that uses an LCD touchscreen in lieu of e-ink. It also has a 400MHz CPU, 128MB of flash memory, and 64 MB worth of RAM. The user has the option of using Transflash cards for up to 4GB worth of extra storage.

The JE100 will also have Mobipocket Reader, as well as support for eReader and MSReader. Rumor has it that it will also have video and audio playback, with the possibility of viewing Microsoft Office documents.

Other features include an integrated speaker plus audio output socket, and the battery life is about 3-6 hours from the 1,500mAh pack. It also features two USB ports: one is for hooking up extra peripherals, and the other for hooking the e-reader to a computer, presumably.

As you can read, details are a little sketchy on the other features of this e-book reader. My sources don’t seem to know the release date or price.

● Great Scott! The Back to the Future II Hat is now available!

marty_mcfly_replica_capSome of you might remember one year ago when we reported on the Nike Hyperdunks, the shoes that Marty McFly and his son wore in Back to the Future II. For those of you who are looking to complete your Future wardrobe, you might consider purchasing the Back to the Future Marty McFly hat.

Some of you might remember that weird rainbow pattern on it, and this one-size-fits-all cap has it. I was never certain if that material was popular in the future, or if only a “complete wimp” like Marty McFly Jr. would wear it. I suppose we will have to wait until the year 2015 to find out. Either way, this cap with its chromatic glory are the ultimate homage to that classic time-travel trilogy.

Now all that is missing is that odd-looking jacket that can adjust its size and dry itself at the touch of a button. I’m sure that somebody is going to make that jacket, if it hasn’t been made already. I imagine that their version of the jacket would be a mere replica, and it wouldn’t do those things. After all, the Hyperdunks failed to have the “power laces” that allowed the shoes to tie themselves.

Fortunately, this rainbow hat has no technological advancements save for a Velcro strap, so it can be purchased for a moderately small price of $20.00.

● Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit: World’s Highest Tech Roller Coaster?

double-take-maneuver_hr-thumb-550x798-19165I remember watching some documentary special on roller coasters, and was very surprised to find that there is nothing holding the cars upside-down on the loop except centrifugal force. In other words, there is very little advanced technology involved with roller coasters, which is why I am skeptical of Universal Orlando theme park calling their Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit “the world’s highest tech roller coaster”.

The 3,800 foot long attraction is unique because it allows the user to select his or her personal soundtrack from many genres, then an individual song. I would hope that Universal would choose “Song 2” by Blur. Just listen to it, and you’ll see why it is perfect song for a roller coaster.

Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit also has a various LED flashing lights, and fourteen digital video cameras to capture the experience. I can’t help but wonder if the user has the option of getting a video clip of their experience after it is over.

As for the ride itself, it begins with a 167-foot vertical lift that the coaster car climbs in 16 seconds. There are also six “near miss encounters”, where the spectator’s roller coaster car will appear to collide with other cars going around the track. There are also many “Treble Clef” curves, like the one you see in the photo here.

So, if the family is headed to Orlando for summer vacation, you might want to stop by Universal Studios Orlando and be prepared to Rip, Ride, and Rockit. The ride is due to open sometime this summer, but I don’t have the exact date.

Sanyo SCP-2700 from Sprint

sanyo-scp-2700Sanyo isn’t exactly one of the more famous names when it comes to the cellphone market here in the US, although they have come up with some pretty good looking clamshells in the past like the Katana series. Well, the latest handset from Sanyo to hit Stateside would be the SCP-2700 from Sprint that ought to make for a great graduation gift if you happen to know anyone in college or high school seniors who have yet to own a cellphone (a rare number, I suspect). What’s up with this handset? Well, let’s take a closer look at what it can offer right after the jump.

The Sanyo SCP-2700 will come with a 2.2″ color LCD display that isn’t touchscreen - now isn’t that a welcome change from the slew of touchscreen handsets that have been making their way across markets all over the world lately? Well, call it old technology, but it does have its niche. The compact candybar handset will feature its own QWERTY keyboard to help you get those text messages and email out in double quick time. Not only that, it will cater to either gender with Impulsive Pink and Deep Blue colors, and with threaded text messaging, it will be much easier to keep track of your conversations each time an email or text message comes in. For folks who can’t live with emoticons, there is a dedicated emoticon key that makes it a snap to insert smiley faces and other symbols into their text messages and emails.

Heck, to make the entire graduation a much more fun affair, why not purchase two SCP-2700’s for free (both mom and daughter can get one apiece to help them keep in touch about the latest in fashion as well as boyfriend advice across a long distance once the “little girl” grows up and leaves the nest) as long as they’re new-line activations and tied down to a two-year service agreement on two Individual Plans with messaging, or a Family Plan with messaging.

The Park ‘N Place Garage Parking Aid

parknplace

It was a long time before I became used to actually parking my car in a garage and everyone has their tricks for dealing with getting in far enough.  The most common one I’ve seen is hanging a tennis ball from the ceiling, but that trick has its own list of problems.  You have to make sure it’s hung at just the right spot, which can be a little more tedious than utilizing a gadget such as this.

Just place it on the ground at the spot you need it, which is a touch more simple than trying to hang something from the ceiling.  Then when you’re pulling in, you have a big red indicator to let you know how far you can pull in.  To top it off, once your car bumps the sign, it has flashing lights that will go off on contact.  It’s also on a flexible stand, so you won’t have to worry about breaking the gadget.  There’s no assembly required and the batteries are included.  You can purchase it from Vat19 for $16.95.

From the WWDC: Apple still sticking to expensive laptops in this economy

New Macbook Lineup promises cheapest/greenest ever.

New Macbook Lineup promises cheapest/greenest ever.

Today, at the Worldwide Developers conference, Apple introduced their latest lines of MacBooks with the typical, high price tag and cool, formfitting features and upgrades.

First on the list was a new 15″ MacBook with a brand new display that has a higher “gamut” of colors and a very long improved battery life of 7 hours and 1,000 charges. It also comes with it’s fastest processor to date - a 3.06 Dual Core CPU and up to 8GB or RAM. The 15″ Macbook also comes with a new SD card slot and the option of up to a 500GB 7200 rpm hard drive or a 256GB SSD drive. Price range - a stunning $1700 to just over $2200, IN THIS ECONOMY.

Next came the 17″ MacBook Pro, updated to 2.8 Ghz with 500 gig HD. Just your standard updgrade. The 13″ Macbook Pro chimes in at $1200 - cheaper than the current MacBook Pro of similar size. There’s also the new MacBook Air, which goes up to 2.13 GHz up to $1800. IN THIS ECONOMY.

No Netbooks for Cupertino, it seems.

According to Apple, these new laptops are the greenest laptops ever and will be running OSX Snow Leopard.

But seriously. A $2200 laptop when you can get a PC for as low as $300 which performs as fast? Cupertino would’ve done better jumping on the netbook bandwagon and setting a higher standard.

The Remote Pet Feeding & Viewing Camera Kit Large Feeder

pet_feeding_kit

For those that have to travel on a regular basis and they have a pet they can’t take with them, it can be frustrating.  You have the options of leaving them there and just attempting to find someone to feed them on occasion or you can take them to a kennel of some kind.  Either option works, but a kennel costs money and sometimes having someone stop in isn’t exactly a reliable method.  Instead, you can try out this feeding system that also allows for you to see exactly how your pet is doing while you’re away from home.

You can view your pet from anywhere in the world, as long as you have the internet and remote access to your at home computer.  When you purchase the feeder you’ll receive a large autofeeder, dishwasher safe bowl, 24hr programmable timer and a non-chewable cord.  The non-chewable cord would definitely come in handy for those leaving this for a dog.  They seem to get even more adventurous when no one is around to keep them entertained.  Really, I’d think this set up would be better for cats, but it’d work for either dogs or cats.  It also includes all needed software, the camera and any other hardware you might need.  You can purchase the large feeder for $289.99 on SmartHome.

New iPhone finally gets video and more

New iPhone 3GS: faster and now with video!

New iPhone 3GS: faster and now with video!

At the World Wide Development Conference, the new iPhone, dubbed iPhone 3GS (speed) introduces a much faster interface and processor, cut and paste, yada yada yada, but what iPhone fans will really enjoy is the new 3MP camera with autofocus, auto white balance, and VIDEO!

BUt that isn’t more. Not only can users capture those priceless moments in video, but they can also edit those clips with the new editing app and then upload either to YouTube, Mobile Me, or email.

The camera shoots in standard definition VGA with audio and at 30 frames per second. Users can also swap between still photo and video mode on the fly. And a new API will enable integration of video capture into applications so that apps of the future will enable the video feature to it’s fullest potential.

There are plenty of other features as well, including vastly improved battery life, a digital compass, voice control, remote wipe in case users find they’re in the unfortunately position of having their iPhone lost or stolen, but the video option means that long weekends and vacations can now be enjoyed and remembered on the fly without lugging around yet another camcorder for video. Very nice.

Cost is $199 for 16GB, 299 for 32 gigs, and the 8GB stays at $99. Comes in black or white and is available June 19th.

Pill MP3 Player

vitaminplayerWe at Coolest Gadgets reported on the Pill USB Drive not long ago, and it reminded me of the Pill MP3 Player that is under development.

Hopefully you can see how small it is from this photo, but if the keyboard isn’t enough to give it scale, then you should know that the Pill MP3 Player is 2.7 inches long and approximately one inch in diameter.

What you can’t tell from the photo is that the user has to pull it apart in order to access the controls, and he or she must twist it forward or back to skip tracks. Other than that, this is all I know about this presently conceptual product. I have no idea how many audio files it can hold, but if it is anything like the Pill USB, it is good enough for 30 minutes of MP3s. That really isn’t much.

I am going to go out on a limb and assume that the user needs to download their tunes by some USB to mini-USB connection.

The Pill MP3 Player is planned to be in production (or should I say prescription) later this year. So, is this the dawning of pill-shaped electronics? Why don’t they just make our cell phones pill shaped, so we can just swallow them whole to take our calls?

jvc-ux-lp5-mini-audio-system-ipod-dockConsidering that we live in the age of the iPod and other MP3 Players, it is very easy to forget that some of us still crave Hi-Fis. In all honesty, I am betting that there is a whole generation that does not know what a Hi-Fi is.

It would appear that JVC is prepared for this brave new world with the UX-LP5. As you can see from the picture, the UX-LP5 has a retractable front flip dock made for the iPod. Not only can the user listen to his or her iPod audio tracks, but the UX-LP5 comes with a video output so he or she can play iPod-stored video to a connected TV. It also has a front audio input to connect to other audio products.

This 30 Watt, two channel Hi-Fi has a total power output of 70 watts with its twin speakers, and has a CD Player, AM/FM radio tuner, and it its compatible with MP3 and WMA audio files. There is also a USB port for accessing other files as well.

Kudos to JVC for merging the Hi-Fi crowd with the iPod crowd. The next time I want to purchase a new Hi-Fi, I know exactly where to go. Of course, I can’t remember the last time in this decade that I was in the market for a Hi-Fi. It is amazing how times have changed.

I believe the JVC UX-LP5 is currently out now, for a price of about $149.95.
